Short answer: if the card still works, top it up. Adding the same $110 costs $2.85 less by top-up than by buying a new card, and a top-up can be as small as $30. More importantly, the card number, expiry, CVV and billing address do not change, so every subscription that has the card saved keeps charging it: no re-entering card details at ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor, and no new verification charge. Buy a new card only when the old one is closed or locked, or when you want a large subscription on a card of its own.

The same $110, two ways
- Top up $110: $5 + 5% of ($110 + $5) = $10.75 in fees, $120.75 in total.
- New $110 card: $10 issuance + 3% of ($110 + $10) = $13.60 in fees, $123.60 in total.
- The top-up is $2.85 cheaper. Paying with Alipay adds a 3% channel fee to both (about $124.37 vs $127.31); USDT and USDC have no extra fee.
- Two cards also mean two monthly fees: each card pays $2.50 a month from its own balance.
For small amounts, a top-up is the only sensible choice
- The minimum top-up is $30. A new regular card starts at $100 (presets from $110).
- If you are one month of ChatGPT Plus short, a $30 top-up costs $36.75 in total. The cheapest new card costs $113.30.
- The $5 is charged per top-up, so one larger top-up beats several small ones: two $50 top-ups cost $115.50, one $100 top-up costs $110.25.
The real reason to top up: nothing to re-link
- Top-up: same card number, expiry, CVV and billing address. The next renewal charges the card as usual.
- New card: you have to add it in every subscription’s payment settings, make it the default and remove the old one. Many services place a small verification charge when a card is added, and that amount is held until it is released.
- If a subscription still points at the old card after you stop using it, every renewal on it will be declined until you switch the card there.

What our customers did
- From 2026-08-20 to 10-27, 132 top-ups were added to 90 cards (88 customers), $13,877.80 in total.
- The most common amounts: $100 (39 times), $30 (26) and $50 (15).
- In the same period, 33 existing customers bought another regular card instead (42 cards). Of the 71 cards they had before, 54 are now closed, so most were replacing a card that had already lapsed.
- 31 of the 132 top-ups came within 7 days after the same card had a declined charge. Topping up a few days before the renewal date avoids that decline and its $1 fee.

When a new card is the only (or better) option
- The card is closed. A card whose balance stays at $0 is closed after 7 days, and a closed card cannot be topped up.
- The card was locked after repeated expiry or CVV errors. On our cards, 6 cards show “ExpiryFailCount” in their declines (62 declines in all); none of them had a successful charge afterwards, and a top-up does not unlock them.
- Declines because the balance was too low are different: a top-up fixes them. Of the 102 cards on our side with 5 or more declines, 67 had a successful charge later.
- You want a large or annual plan (for example Claude Max) on its own card so it does not compete for balance with other subscriptions.
