When Do ChatGPT and Claude Auto-Renewals Charge Your Card? 163 Renewals on Our Cards: 100 Within 5 Minutes of Last Month’s Charge Time, the First Renewal About 1 Hour Later Than Sign-Up, and Only 4 of 17 Low-Balance Declines Recovered — All After a Top-Up — 2026

An AI subscription renewal usually charges your card on the same day of the month, at almost the same minute as the previous charge. We checked 163 renewals of ChatGPT, Claude, Google One and Grok on our own cards over 90 days: 100 came within 5 minutes of the previous charge’s clock time, and 39 came about an hour off — 34 of those were the first renewal after sign-up. 132 of 139 ChatGPT renewals were 30 or 31 days after the last charge. 61 first attempts were declined, 29 for low balance; of 17 ChatGPT low-balance declines we could follow for 20 days, only 4 were paid later, every one after the card was topped up. How to find your renewal time and when to top up.

Short answer: ChatGPT, Claude and similar AI subscriptions renew on the same day of the month as your last payment, at almost the same time of day. If last month’s charge hit at 13:48, expect this month’s at about 13:48. The first renewal after you subscribe tends to come about an hour later than the time you signed up; after that it stays on the same minute. On a prepaid card, the safe move is to top up the day before: a top-up is usually on the card within 5–10 minutes, but the renewal does not wait, and a declined charge costs $1.

Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). Data: charges on our own cards from 2026-07-30 to the end of 2026-10-27 UTC. A renewal is the first charge attempt by the same service on the same card 27–32 days after its previous successful charge. That gives 163 renewals: ChatGPT 139, Claude 12, Google One 8, Grok 4. Times are compared as clock time (UTC).

What time renewals hit: 163 renewals on our cards

  • 100 came within 5 minutes of the previous charge’s clock time.
  • 39 came about an hour off: 38 were 55–62 minutes later, 1 was 58 minutes earlier. In 34 of these 39, the previous charge was the sign-up payment, so the first renewal lands about an hour after the time you subscribed. Only 6 of the 100 “same minute” renewals followed a sign-up payment.
  • Together that is 143 of 163 (88%) within about an hour. The other 20 were off by more than an hour, up to 12 hours.
  • ChatGPT: 132 of 139 renewals were 30 or 31 days after the last charge, so in practice the same date each month.
  • Claude is less exact: of 12 renewals, 2 were within 5 minutes and 4 within an hour; plan for the same day, give or take a few hours.
How to find your renewal time: ChatGPT shows the next billing date under Settings → Account (or My Plan); Claude under Settings → Billing. Or look at the last subscription charge in your card’s transaction history: next month’s charge comes at about the same date and time.

Why first renewal attempts were declined

  • 61 of the 163 renewals were declined on the first attempt.
  • 30 were “Blocked”: the card had been closed while the subscription kept billing it. All 29 cards involved are closed. Before you stop using a card, switch the card in the subscription or cancel it.
  • 29 were low balance: “cumulative amount limit” (25), “maximum single transaction value” (3) or “daily transaction amount limit” (1). All of them mean the charge was bigger than what was available on the card.
  • 2 were Google One charges refused because of the merchant category.

Waiting for the automatic retry rarely works

23 ChatGPT renewals were declined for low balance. For the 17 declined before October 8 we can see the following 20 days: only 4 were paid on the same card in that time, and each of the 4 was paid after the card was topped up.

  • Top-up on the card 9 minutes after the decline; the renewal went through 5 minutes later.
  • Top-up on the card about a day after the decline; the renewal went through 36 minutes after the funds landed.
  • Two cards were topped up 1.5–3 days after the decline; their renewals went through 14 hours and about 12 days after the funds landed.
  • The other 13 were not paid within 20 days, so those subscriptions most likely lapsed. Without a top-up, the retries just decline again.
Retrying right after paying for a top-up gets declined again: the funds count only once the top-up shows “On card”. Every decline before that costs $1 (at most 3 per card per month).

When to top up, and how much

  • The day before the renewal date. That leaves time for the top-up to land and you will not forget.
  • Amount = this period’s bill including tax + $1 transaction fee. On the 1st of the month the card also pays the $2.50 monthly fee.
  • A $20 plan such as ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro is $20–$22 with tax, so keep $23.50–$25.50 for the month; a $30 top-up ($36.75 in total) covers it.
  • Several services on one card: list their renewal dates and top up before the earliest one.
  • Already declined: top up, wait for “On card”, then pay the open invoice once (ChatGPT: Settings; Claude: Billing). Do not keep clicking retry.

Need a new card (USDT or USDC)

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
  2. Pay with USDT on BEP-20 or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
  3. The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).

Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-28)

  • Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10). A $110 card costs $123.60, a $220 card $236.90.
  • From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month.
  • Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month).
  • Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), minimum top-up $30, usually on the card within 5–10 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
  • Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying.

FAQ

What time does ChatGPT charge for renewal?

At about the same time of day as your previous payment, on the same date each month. On our cards, 132 of 139 ChatGPT renewals were 30 or 31 days after the last charge, and most landed within 5 minutes of its clock time.

Why did my first renewal come an hour later than when I subscribed?

That is the usual pattern: in 34 of 39 renewals that were about an hour off, the previous charge was the sign-up payment. From the second renewal on, charges stay on the same minute.

Does Claude renew at the same time too?

The same day, but less exactly. Of 12 Claude renewals on our cards, 6 were within an hour of the previous charge time and the rest further off.

Will the subscription retry after a low-balance decline?

It may, but the retry fails again until the balance is there. Of 17 ChatGPT low-balance declines we could follow for 20 days, the 4 that were paid were all paid after a top-up.

How early should I top up?

The day before the renewal date. Top-ups usually land within 5–10 minutes, and a day’s margin avoids a $1 decline fee.

What does “Blocked” on a renewal mean?

On our cards every “Blocked” renewal decline was on a card that had been closed while the subscription kept billing it. Add a working card in the subscription or cancel it.
