Grok Renewal Payment Failed? How Often xAI and Google Play Retry the Charge (Every Half Day to Two Days for 7 Days on grok.com, Every 12 Hours for 15 Days on Google Play), Where to Change the Card, Why a $30 Plan Lands at $31.80 in CNY, and Extra Usage Credits Charges (189 Grok Records on 75 of Our Cards) — 2026

Grok (SuperGrok, The X Subscription) renewal declined? On our own prepaid cards it is almost always the balance: 50 of 78 declined Grok charges were cumulative amount, maximum single transaction, daily or monthly limit, 27 were renewals still being tried on closed cards. 54 of the 78 came from just 5 renewals that failed and were retried automatically: grok.com retried every 11 to 56 hours for up to 7 days, Google Play every 12 hours for 6 days and then daily, 21 times in 15 days. Where to update the card or cancel, why the same plan can cost $31.80 instead of $30, what the $8, $15 and other small Grok charges are, and how much to keep on the card. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: when a Grok renewal fails on a prepaid card, the card almost always did not have enough left for that one charge. You do not need to subscribe again right away. If you subscribed on grok.com, xAI tries the same card again roughly every half day to two days, and we have seen it keep trying for 7 days. If you subscribed in the Android app through Google Play, Google retries every 12 hours for the first 6 days and then once a day, for about two weeks. Top up within that window and the next retry goes through. If you want to stop, cancel where you subscribed; a declined card is not the same as a cancellation.

Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). xAI’s rules are from the Billing & Subscriptions and Usage & Limits sections of grok.com/faq, and Google Play’s from the Google Play Help Center article “Learn about subscription grace periods”, both checked on 2026-10-25; menu names can differ slightly in your account. Card data covers every charge with Grok or xAI in the merchant name on our own cards from 2026-05-06 to 2026-10-27 (UTC; times below are UTC). Pink Card fees are those shown on the purchase page on 2026-10-28. Pink Card is not affiliated with xAI or X.

First, which kind of Grok charge is it

  • grok.com web subscription: the merchant name on the card is GROK XAI PALO ALTO. Plan, card and cancellation are all in your grok.com account.
  • Subscribed in the Android app: billed by Google Play, merchant name like GOOGLE *Grok AI. Change the card or cancel in Google Play.
  • Subscribed in the iPhone app: billed by Apple, using the payment method in your Apple account; the card shows an Apple merchant name.
  • Extra Usage Credits: bought on the web when the weekly usage runs out. grok.com/faq says they can only be bought on the web, the minimum is $5, they are added immediately and expire after one year.
  • Auto Top Up: when turned on, it buys more credits automatically when the balance runs low, up to the amount and monthly limit you set. These charges do not come on the billing date and can arrive at any time.
Not every Grok charge is a renewal. Since The X Subscription replaced SuperGrok in mid-October 2026, the most common amounts from GROK XAI on our cards are $15 (17 cards, from 10-14; Premium is 50% off for the first month on grok.com) and $8 (8 cards, from 10-16; the Plus price). Other round amounts that are not on a billing date, such as $5, $10, $20 or $25, match Extra Usage Credits. We only see the amount, not what was bought. If you see a Grok charge you do not recognise, check the Usage page on grok.com to see whether Auto Top Up is on.

What we saw on our own cards

From 2026-05-06 to 2026-10-27 there were 189 Grok and xAI records on 75 of our cards: 109 successful charges on 72 cards, $3,477.69 in total (3 of them $0.00 card checks), 78 declines on 14 cards and 2 still pending. Grok is growing fast on our cards: in the last 30 days alone there were 78 successful charges on 57 cards ($2,230.89) and 32 declines on 10 cards.

  • 50 of the 78 declines were the balance or a card limit: “cumulative amount limit” 27, “maximum single transaction value” 11, “daily transaction amount limit” 6, “monthly transaction amount limit” 6. All of them mean the charge was bigger than what the card could spend at that moment.
  • 27 were “Blocked”, on 3 cards that have since been closed: the card was gone but the subscription was still there, and xAI or Google kept trying on schedule.
  • 1 was “Card expiry check failed”: the expiry date was typed wrong.
  • 54 of the 78 (about 70%) came from only 5 subscription charges that did not go through and were then retried automatically. Very few cards really “could not pay Grok”; most of the declines are the same failed renewal being retried again and again.

grok.com: retried every half day to two days, for up to 7 days

  • One card subscribed on 2026-09-21 at 05:31, about $31.82 a month. The renewal on 10-21 at 06:31 was declined (not enough balance), then retried on 10-21 20:31, 10-23 04:32, 10-23 19:32, 10-24 19:32, 10-26 01:32, 10-27 01:32 and 10-27 15:32: 8 declines in 6½ days, gaps of 14 to 32 hours, and the minute of the hour never changed. It had not been topped up when we wrote this.
  • Another card was declined 10 times in 7 days from 05-09; the later ones turned into “Blocked” (the card has since been closed). The last attempt came only 2 hours after the one before, in US dollars ($30.00) instead of yuan, and then the retries stopped.
  • One card paid $99 in August; on 09-02 a $300 charge came in, more than the balance (“maximum single transaction value”). After 3 declines the records turned into “Blocked” (the card has since been closed) and 6 more followed. Again the retries stopped after 7 days.
  • One card had two $99 charges every month about 48 minutes apart. In August the first went through and left too little for the second, which was declined 6 times in 3 days.

Google Play: every 12 hours, for about two weeks

  • One card paid $29.99 a month through Google Play, successfully on 05-11 and 06-09, both at 05:52.
  • The renewal on 07-09 at 05:52 was declined for lack of balance. Google then tried at 05:52 and 17:52 every day for 6 days, then once a day at about 05:52 until 07-24: 21 declines in 15 days.
  • The Google Play Help Center says a declined renewal may enter a grace period, during which the subscription keeps working and Google Play keeps retrying; the length depends on the subscription, from 0 to 30 days. If it is still unpaid after that, the subscription goes on account hold and the benefits stop.
Declined charges cost $1 each on Pink Card, but at most 3 per card per month, so 21 retries still cost $3 at most. What matters is topping up quickly: once the retries stop, the subscription usually ends and you have to subscribe again.

Credits bought again and again within minutes

Not every Grok decline is a renewal. On 10-23 one card tried to buy $20, $19 and $10 of credits again and again: 9 attempts were declined over about 6 hours, mostly a few minutes apart, while $20 and $7 went through in between. The card’s balance and daily and monthly limits had already been used up by the earlier purchases. Another card tried $18 and $15 six times in 3 minutes. If a credits purchase is declined, check the balance first instead of clicking again.

Charged in Chinese yuan: ¥208–¥212, about $31.80

  • Some accounts are billed by grok.com in Chinese yuan. On our cards, 3 such charges went through: ¥211.26, ¥209.30 and ¥208.92, which came to $31.82–$31.83. 19 were declined on 3 cards, between ¥208.02 and ¥212.51 ($31.80–$31.84).
  • So the same $30 plan cost about $31.80 on the card, around $1.80 more than the US dollar price. Keep $31.80 plus the $1 fee, not $30.
  • On two cards, after a yuan charge was declined, a $30.00 charge in US dollars came in. On one of them, ¥208.95 ($31.80) was declined at 07:05 and 07:09 on 10-09 and $30.00 went through at 07:14. We do not see the checkout page, so we do not know what changed in between.
  • Other currencies appear too: Japanese yen (¥960, about $6.25), Hong Kong dollars, British pounds, Macau patacas and Vietnamese dong. The card converts them to US dollars at the network rate on the day; Pink Card adds no currency conversion fee.

Where to change the card, cancel or ask for a refund (from grok.com/faq)

  1. Subscribed on the web: sign in and open grok.com/?_s=billing, then Manage Subscription. You can change plan, update the payment method or cancel there. If the button does nothing, an ad blocker is often the cause; try a private window or another browser, or ask xAI support to change the card.
  2. Subscribed in the Android app: change the card or cancel in Google Play subscriptions.
  3. Subscribed in the iPhone app: cancel in your Apple account subscriptions; refunds also go through Apple.
  4. Cancel in time: the grok.com plans page says to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge.
  5. Refunds for web and Google Play subscriptions: use xAI’s refund request form (accounts.x.ai/refund); approved refunds usually reach the original payment method in 5–10 business days. API credits are not refunded.
grok.com/faq also notes: if you subscribed on the web but the app does not show it, you are probably signed in with a different account (for example X in one place and Google in the other). It is not necessarily a double charge. Check the account before subscribing again, or you really will pay twice.

How much to keep on the card before the renewal

  • Pink Card charges $1 per successful transaction and $2.50 per month.
  • A $30 plan charged in US dollars: keep at least $31. Prices exclude tax; if tax is added for your billing address, keep the taxed amount plus $1.
  • Charged in yuan: keep $31.80 + $1 = $32.80.
  • If the renewal falls right after the 1st of the month, add the $2.50 monthly fee.
  • If the same card also pays ChatGPT, Claude or a second Grok plan, add up every charge that falls on the same days.
  • If Auto Top Up is on, count its monthly limit too, or turn it off so credits do not use up the renewal money.

Already have a Pink Card: top up the same card

Topping up keeps the same card number, expiry and CVV, so the card saved at grok.com or Google Play does not have to be entered again; the next retry uses the new balance. A $30 top-up costs $5 + ($30 + $5) × 5% = $6.75 in fees ($36.75 in total). Top-ups usually reach the card within 5–10 minutes of payment. The card in the first example above had $11.68 left; after a $30 top-up it would have $41.68, enough for a $31.82 charge plus the $1 fee.

Need a card for Grok and other AI subscriptions (USDT or USDC)

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
  2. Pay with USDT on BEP-20 or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
  3. The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).
  4. Add the card at grok.com with the billing address from the email exactly as written, and submit once.

Whether a charge goes through is decided by the merchant and the card issuer; Grok charges on our cards have both succeeded and failed, and we cannot promise every one will. Every charge and decline, with its reason, is listed in the card’s transaction history.

Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-28)

  • Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10). A $110 card costs $123.60, a $220 card $236.90.
  • From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month.
  • Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month). Reversed charges do not reduce the balance.
  • Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), minimum top-up $30, usually on the card within 5–10 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
  • Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying.

FAQ

How often does Grok retry a failed renewal?

On our cards, grok.com retried every 11 to 56 hours (most often 11–15) and stopped after about 7 days (up to 10 declines). Google Play retried every 12 hours for 6 days and then daily, 21 times in 15 days. Top up the card and wait for the next retry.

Does Grok stop working as soon as the renewal fails?

For web subscriptions we only see the charges, not your plan status. For Google Play, Google says a grace period of 0 to 30 days may apply during which the subscription keeps working, followed by account hold. The safest is to top up the same day.

How do I change the card for Grok?

Web: sign in, open grok.com/?_s=billing and use Manage Subscription to update the payment method; if it does not open, try a private window or another browser. Android app: Google Play. iPhone app: your Apple account.

Why was my $30 Grok plan charged $31.80?

The account was billed in Chinese yuan (about ¥208–¥212), and the card converted it at the day’s rate. On our cards those charges came to $31.80–$31.84. Keep $31.80 plus the $1 fee.

What are the small Grok charges that are not on my billing date?

Since mid-October, $8 is usually The X Subscription Plus and $15 a first month of Premium at 50% off. Other round amounts such as $5, $10 or $20 are usually Extra Usage Credits (minimum $5) or Auto Top Up buying credits when the balance runs low. Check the Usage page on grok.com.

Do the declined retries cost money?

The declined amount is not taken from the balance, but Pink Card charges $1 per declined charge, at most 3 per card per month.
