Claude API Credits Payment Failed? Why Buying Credits or Auto-Reload in the Claude Console Gets Declined, Why the Same Amount Is Tried 3 Times in Seconds, Charges in Singapore or Canadian Dollars, and Where to Change the Card (256 ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO Records on Our Cards) — 2026

Buying Claude API credits in the Claude Console, or an auto-reload, was declined? Most of the time the card did not have enough money for that one charge. How Console credits are billed, what happens when they run out (402 billing_error, API and Workbench stop), why your USD card was charged in Singapore or Canadian dollars, where to change the card and turn auto-reload off, how much to keep on the card, and real data from our own prepaid cards: 256 ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO records on 108 cards, 77 successful charges ($4,364.55) and 28 declines, 22 of them for not enough balance, 15 of them the same amount tried three times within two minutes. Updated October 2026.

Claude API credits payment failed, short answer: when buying credits or an auto-reload in the Claude Console is declined, in most cases the card did not have enough money for that one charge. The card itself is usually fine. Do not click again and again: check the balance, then add money or buy a smaller amount, and submit once. When the credits run out, the API and Workbench stop until you buy more. If you do not want automatic charges, turn auto-reload off in the Console’s Billing page.

Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). Anthropic’s rules are taken from the Claude Help Center articles “How do I pay for my Claude API usage?” and “Understanding your Claude API invoices” and from the Errors page of the Claude API docs, checked on 2026-10-25. Charge data covers every ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO record on our own cards from 2026-04-22 to 2026-10-27; it shows merchant name, amount and result only, nothing about what was bought. Pink Card fees are those shown on the purchase page on 2026-10-27. Pink Card is not affiliated with Anthropic.

First, check which Anthropic charge it is

  • ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB: a Claude Pro or Max subscription, managed in Settings → Billing on claude.ai.
  • ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO, without CLAUDE SUB: the other kind. Console credit purchases and auto-reloads show up under this name, and so do $0 card checks.
  • API credits live in the Claude Console (platform.claude.com) under Billing. They are separate from the subscription: a Max plan does not give you API credits by itself, and API credits cannot pay for Pro or Max.

How Console credits are billed (from the Help Center)

  • The API and Workbench run on prepaid usage credits: you buy first, usage is deducted. Credits bought in the Console can also be used with Claude Code.
  • Only successful requests are charged; failed requests are not.
  • When the credits run out, you cannot call the API or use Workbench until you buy more.
  • Purchased credits show up right away; balance and usage are on the same Billing page.
  • Auto-reload buys credits automatically when the balance falls below a threshold you set. To turn it off: Manage auto-reload → Turn off, then confirm with Turn off again.
  • Every purchase, including auto-reloads, sends a receipt titled “Your receipt from Anthropic” to the billing email.
  • Credits expire one year after purchase and cannot be extended. Credit purchases are non-refundable.
  • Max and Team plans include some monthly API credits once the Console organization is linked to the plan. Those are used first, and unused included credits expire at the end of the month.
  • A 402 billing_error from the API means there is a problem with the payment details; check the payment method in the Console.

What we saw on our own cards

We checked every ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO record on our cards from 2026-04-22 to 2026-10-27: 256 records on 108 cards. 150 were $0 card checks (98 cards); 72 cards have nothing but $0 checks under this name, and 18 of those paid Claude through ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB instead, so a $0 check here does not tell you whether the card was added in the Console or on claude.ai. 77 real charges went through (35 cards, $4,364.55 in total), 28 were declined (10 cards) and 1 charge of $5 was reversed. In the last 30 days, 5 cards paid the Claude API: 6 charges, $286.04, no declines.

  • Bigger purchases are round numbers: 47 of the 77 charges were whole-dollar amounts, and all 18 charges of $100 or more (9 cards, $2,810 in total) were. That fits buying a fixed amount of credits.
  • Of the 28 declines, 22 were about balance: 19 “monthly transaction amount limit” (4 cards) and 3 “Insufficient funds” (2 cards). Both mean the charge was larger than what the card had left.
  • 4 declines were Blocked (3 cards); all three cards are closed now. One card made its last successful Claude API charge on May 15 at 05:28 UTC, was declined 14 minutes later, and was declined again for $20 on May 27, still the same saved card. 2 more were $1 charges rejected as an invalid amount.
  • 15 declines were the same card being tried for the same amount three times in a row: 5 such groups on 3 cards, four of them within 20 seconds and one within 2 minutes. We only see the charges, so we cannot tell whether Anthropic retried or someone clicked several times.
  • 30 records were not in US dollars: 15 in Singapore dollars, 12 in Canadian dollars, 3 in British pounds. The card converts at the rate of the day, so the same foreign amount can come out a few cents different each time: 63.77 Singapore dollars was $51.09 on May 1, $51.21 on May 2 and $51.30 on May 13.

Examples from individual cards (UTC)

  • Same amount, nine declines: one $100 card paid 71.19 Canadian dollars ($53.29) at 10:29 on May 9, which left too little for a second purchase. The same 71.19 was tried 3 times at 16:33, 3 times at 11:26 the next day, and after the card was added again (a new $0 check at 11:53) 3 more times within 9 seconds. The amount never changed, and all 9 were declined.
  • A smaller amount went through right away: on May 13, 63.77 Singapore dollars was declined 3 times between 18:50 and 18:52, and less than a minute later 21.80 Singapore dollars went through. Another card was declined 3 times for 63.77 Singapore dollars within 15 seconds on May 2, and 46.87 went through about an hour later.
  • Same amount twice: that first card was charged 21.80 Singapore dollars at 23:46 on May 22, and an identical charge 32 minutes later was declined for lack of balance.
Pink Card charges $1 per transaction, and each auto-reload is a transaction, so set a larger reload amount to have fewer charges. Declined charges also cost $1, but at most 3 per card per month, so three tries in a few seconds cost at most $3.

What to do after a failed charge

  1. Look at the reason first: open the card’s transaction history. Monthly transaction amount limit, Insufficient funds or cumulative amount limit mean the balance was not enough; add money or buy less. Blocked means the card can no longer be used; switch to another card.
  2. Not enough balance: top up the card, wait until the money is on the card, then buy credits once in Billing in the Console. Or buy a smaller amount first so the API keeps running.
  3. Change the card: replace the payment method in the Console’s Billing page and remove the old card, so auto-reload does not keep trying a closed card.
  4. Stop automatic charges: Billing → Manage auto-reload → Turn off. If you keep it, set the threshold and reload amount again to match your real usage.
  5. The API stopped: check whether the credits are used up and buy more. A 402 billing_error points to the payment method; check the card in the Console.
  6. After a decline, do not keep clicking or delete and re-add the card in a loop. Once the money is there, submit once.

How much to keep on the card

  • Manual purchase: the amount you are buying, plus tax if your billing address is taxable, plus $1 for the transaction fee.
  • Auto-reload: the reload amount plus $1; ideally enough for two reloads.
  • Charged in a foreign currency: keep a little extra for exchange-rate differences.
  • If the same card also pays a Claude or ChatGPT subscription, add those amounts together around the renewal dates.
  • Pink Card also takes a $2.50 monthly fee from the balance.

Already have a Pink Card: top up the same card

Topping up keeps the same card number, so nothing needs to change in the Console; the next purchase or auto-reload uses the new balance. A $30 top-up costs $5 + ($30 + $5) × 5% = $6.75 in fees ($36.75 in total); a $100 top-up costs $10.25 ($110.25 in total). Top-ups usually reach the card within 5–10 minutes of payment; buy credits after the money lands.

Pay the Claude API with a prepaid virtual card (USDT or USDC)

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
  2. Pay with USDT on BEP-20 or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
  3. The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).
  4. In the Claude Console, open Billing, add the card with the billing address from the email exactly as written, and buy credits once.

Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-27)

  • Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10). A $110 card costs $123.60, a $220 card $236.90.
  • From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month.
  • Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month). Reversed charges do not reduce the balance.
  • Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), minimum top-up $30, usually on the card within 5–10 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
  • Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying.
The Claude API is only for users in locations Anthropic supports. We see both successful and declined Claude API charges on our cards, so we cannot promise every charge will go through. Pink Card is a payment tool and does not replace complying with Anthropic’s terms.

FAQ

What happens when my Claude API credits run out?

According to the Claude Help Center, you cannot call the API or use Workbench until you buy more credits. Purchased credits show up right away. If you use auto-reload, make sure the card can cover the reload amount.

What is the difference between ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO and ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB on my card?

CLAUDE SUB is the claude.ai Pro or Max subscription. Plain ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO is the other kind: Console credit purchases and auto-reloads show up under it, and so do $0 card checks. 98 of our cards have a $0 check under that name.

Where do I turn off Claude API auto-reload?

In the Claude Console, open Billing, click Manage auto-reload, then Turn off, and confirm with Turn off again.

Why was my USD card charged in Singapore or Canadian dollars?

On our cards, 30 of 256 Anthropic API records were in another currency (15 Singapore dollars, 12 Canadian dollars, 3 pounds). The card converts at the rate of the day, so the same amount can cost a few cents more or less each time. Keep a little extra on the card.

Can I get a refund for Claude API credits?

The Help Center says credit purchases are non-refundable, and credits expire one year after purchase. Buy what you expect to use.

Can I pay the Claude API with USDT?

Not directly. You can buy a prepaid virtual card with USDT (BEP-20 or ERC-20) or USDC (ERC-20) at pinkcard.cc and add it in the Console’s Billing page.
