Claude Code Payment Failed? Which Plan Pays for Claude Code (Pro $20, Max $100 / $200 or Console API Credits), Where Each One Is Billed, Why the API Key Can Bill You Instead, and Why the Charge Is Declined (50 Claude Declines on Our Cards in 90 Days) — 2026

Claude Code is not sold on its own: you use it with a Claude Pro or Max subscription, or with prepaid API credits from the Claude Console. Which one you pay for, where the card is charged (claude.ai Settings → Billing or the Console), why an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY on your machine bills API credits instead of your plan, what usage credits are, and why the payment fails. Real data from our own cards over 90 days: 40 successful Claude subscription charges on 28 cards ($4,867.70) and 50 declines on 10 cards, 40 of them because the balance was short; 4 of the cards later paid after a top-up landed.

Short answer: Claude Code comes with a paid Claude plan (Pro or Max) or runs on prepaid API credits from the Claude Console. The Free plan does not include it. The subscription is charged on claude.ai under Settings → Billing; API credits are bought in the Console’s Billing page. When a Claude Code payment fails on a prepaid card, it is usually the balance being short for that one charge, often because tax was added. Top up, wait until the money is on the card, and submit once.

Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). Plan rules come from claude.com/pricing and the Claude Help Center articles “Using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan” and “Usage credits for paid Claude plans”, checked on 2026-10-28. Charge data covers every Anthropic charge on our own cards from 2026-07-30 to 2026-10-27 (UTC, the last 90 days). Fees are those on the purchase and top-up pages on 2026-10-28. Which plan pays for Claude Code

  • Free: Claude Code is not included.
  • Pro: $20 a month, or $200 billed up front for a year ($17 a month). Includes Claude Code.
  • Max: from $100 a month (Max 5x $100, Max 20x $200), billed monthly. Includes Claude Code with higher limits.
  • All prices are before tax; tax is added for your billing address.
  • Usage limits are shared: chatting on claude.ai and Claude Code count against the same limits, with a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit.
  • Console API credits: pay as you go, bought in advance in the Claude Console. Separate from the subscription: a plan does not add Console credits, and Console credits do not pay for Pro or Max.

Where each one is charged

  • Pro / Max: claude.ai → Settings → Billing. The card line reads ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB.
  • Console API credits and auto-reload: Billing in the Claude Console. The card line reads ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO, without CLAUDE SUB.
  • Usage credits (after you hit the plan limit): turn on under Settings → Usage on claude.ai. They are prepaid, can auto-reload below a threshold, can have a monthly spending cap, are billed at API rates, and also cover Claude Code in the terminal.
  • Subscribed in the Android or iPhone app: Google Play or Apple bills it. On our cards, the 2 Claude charges through Google Play in this period did not stick: one was declined as a restricted merchant type, the other was reversed. Subscribe on the web with the card instead.
Check for an API key. The Help Center says that if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, and the usage is charged as API usage. If you logged in through Console pay-as-you-go before, run /login inside Claude Code to switch to your plan.

What we saw on our cards (last 90 days)

  • Claude subscriptions (ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB): 40 successful charges on 28 cards, $4,867.70 in total.
  • By size: about $20 (Pro) 11 charges; about $100 (Max 5x) 10; about $200 (Max 20x or Pro annual, the amount alone does not tell them apart) 16. 10 of the 37 carried tax, for example $21.78, $106.25 and $220.
  • 3 other amounts ($80.01, $133.31, $147.57). From the amount alone we cannot tell whether these were plan changes or something else.
  • Console API (ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO): 6 successful charges on 5 cards, $286.04, no declines.
  • 13 Claude subscription charges on 9 cards were reversed (the money went back to the card), $1,508.88 in total.

Why the payment was declined

  • 50 Claude subscription declines on 10 cards. 40 of them (8 cards) were the balance being short: “cumulative amount limit” 22, “greater than the maximum single transaction value” 14, “monthly transaction amount limit” 2, “Insufficient funds” 2.
  • 7 were expiry-date errors on a single card. The first five each came 1–2 seconds after a low-balance decline for $220, so they were the merchant retrying, not a typo; the card was then blocked by the ExpiryFailCount rule.
  • 3 were “Blocked” on 2 cards. Both cards are closed now; the subscription was still billing a card that was no longer in use.
  • 31 of the 50 declines came within 10 minutes of a previous decline on the same card. Retrying without adding money only adds another $1 fee.

How the low-balance cases ended (UTC)

  • Of the 8 cards declined for low balance, 5 later paid Claude on the same card, and 4 of those paid after a top-up landed.
  • A $20 Pro charge was declined 8 times in under 9 minutes. A top-up landed 14 minutes after the first decline, and the $20 went through about 9.6 hours after the top-up.
  • An $80 charge was declined 4 times in about 2.5 minutes. The top-up landed, and $80.01 went through about a minute later.
  • A $100 Max 5x renewal, 30 days after the previous one, was declined 6 times in about 30 minutes. It was paid about 8.7 hours after a top-up landed.
  • The 3 cards that never paid: one was declined 5 times for $220 and never topped up; the others for $200 and for about $87.

Fix order

  1. Check which charge failed: ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB (plan) or ANTHROPIC SAN FRANCISCO (Console credits). Fix it in the matching Billing page.
  2. Read the decline reason in the card’s transaction history. A balance reason means top up; Blocked means the card is closed, so add another card.
  3. Keep the taxed amount + $1 on the card: Pro at 10% tax $22 + $1, Max 5x $110 + $1, Max 20x $220 + $1, plus the $2.50 monthly fee on the 1st.
  4. Wait until the top-up shows “On card” (usually within 5–10 minutes), then submit once.
  5. In Claude Code, run /login and make sure no ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set if you want the plan, not API credits, to be used.

Top up the same card

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en, click “Balance & Top Up” at the top, and enter the 16-digit card number and the 3-digit lookup code (the card’s CVV).
  2. Choose an amount (minimum $30) and pay with USDT on ERC-20 or BEP-20, USDC on ERC-20, or Alipay.
  3. Top-up cost: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5). $30 → $36.75 (one month of Pro with tax), $110 → $120.75 (Max 5x), $230 → $246.75 (Max 20x).
  4. The card number does not change, so claude.ai keeps billing the same card.

New card for Claude Code (USDT or USDC)

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
  2. Pay with USDT on BEP-20 or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
  3. The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).
  4. On claude.ai, open Settings → Billing, add the card with the billing address from the email exactly as written, and pay once.

Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-28)

  • Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10). A $110 card costs $123.60; a custom $250 card for Max 20x costs $267.80.
  • From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month. Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month).
  • Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), minimum $30, usually on the card within 5–10 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
  • Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying.
Claude is only offered in the locations Anthropic supports. We see both successful and declined Claude charges on our cards, so we cannot promise every charge will go through. Pink Card is a payment tool and does not replace following Anthropic’s terms.

FAQ

Is Claude Code free?

No. The Free plan does not include it. Use it with Pro ($20 a month or $200 a year), Max ($100 or $200 a month), or Console API credits.

Should I pay for Pro or Max for Claude Code?

Pro if you use it now and then; Max if you hit the five-hour or weekly limit often. Limits are shared with claude.ai chats. Past the limit you can also turn on usage credits under Settings → Usage, billed at API rates.

Why was I charged for API usage when I have a Pro plan?

Claude Code uses an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable over your subscription if one is set, and that usage is billed to the Console. Remove the key and run /login to use your plan.

Why was my Claude Code payment declined?

On our cards, 40 of 50 Claude subscription declines in 90 days were the balance being short for that one charge. Keep the taxed price plus $1 on the card, and if you just topped up, wait until it is on the card.

Where do I change the card for Claude Code?

For Pro or Max, on claude.ai under Settings → Billing. For API credits, in the Billing page of the Claude Console. If you subscribed in a mobile app, the card is managed by Apple or Google.

Can I pay for Claude Code with USDT?

Not directly; Anthropic takes cards. You can buy a Pink Card prepaid virtual card with USDT (BEP-20 or ERC-20) or USDC (ERC-20) and add it on claude.ai.
